A survey
of incoming students during College Days last spring revealed interest in
photojournalism, prompting a new photojournalism concentration under the mass
communication major. Several new corresponding courses have been created,
including advanced photojournalism, directed photojournalism project and newspaper
staff photographer practicum.
A new major
in the Technology Department takes graphic design to another level. While
graphic design is for the print medium, the new program, called New Media
Imaging, will cover emerging media technologies. For students who want to
make games, do animation, make short films or do Web design, this is the curriculum.
Classes include programming for business, video, cad drafting, graphic communication,
3-dimensional modeling, animation, special effects and advanced Web page design
classes.
The Mathematics
Department is now offering a major in actuarial studies. Actuaries are experts
in mathematical modeling and business and are employed by insurance companies,
companies with retirement and employee benefits plans, and financial institutions
that manage risk.
Two new
programs under the Master of Arts in Teaching (mat) are now offered by the
School of Education and Psychology. These studies offer teachers a terminal
masters degree, one that does not include the traditional research/statistics
core or position the recipient to go on to earn a doctorate. The mat in curriculum
and instruction is for the teacher who wants to enhance his or her competence
in curriculum design and implementation in the classroom. The mat in students
at risk is for the teacher who wants to better understand and minister to
at-risk students.
