New Master Plan Outlines College Vision and Goals

On the eve of its 113th school year, Walla Walla College has adopted the most comprehensive master plan in the history of the school. From course evaluation to student services, the plan addresses all facets of college life.

“As a leading institution of Seventh-day Adventist higher education, we are committed to serving the evolving needs of our students and our church,” says Jon Dybdahl, president of WWC. “The master plan sets a course of action to ensure we are accomplishing this goal and meeting the mission of our college.”

Work on the plan began in 2003 at the recommendation of the college’s accrediting body, the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. College leaders drafted the plan over several months, inviting review by faculty, staff, students, and alumni representatives. The college board of trustees approved the plan at its meeting last fall.

As an introduction to the plan, statements of identity, vision, and values define the college’s purpose. Goals include, to:
1. Increase devotion to God.
2. Foster quality instruction and responsible scholarship.
3. Build caring community.
4. Increase Adventist wholism.
5. Steward resources.
6. Recruit and retain quality students.
7. Increase support and philanthropy.

To accomplish these goals, college leaders have also written a detailed action plan, outlining timelines and assigned tasks.

“The work of preparing this master plan helped us think more in terms of how our department relates to others,” says June Ferguson, vice president for student administration. “We found ourselves asking ‘what can I do in my area to help fulfill the goals of other areas?’ It’s nice to see the collaboration, and nice to see that we are working more deliberately toward the same goals.” W
