Work Outside Classroom Yields Award for WWC Students

The Walla Walla College SIFE team won top honors for the third year in a row at the 2000 Students in Free Enterprise Regional Exposition and Career Opportunity Fair held in April in Seattle, Wash.

SIFE encourages students to take classroom knowledge and apply it to real-life situations, and to use their knowledge to better their communities. Teams establish community outreach programs that teach free enterprise concepts such as budgeting, accounting, and supply and demand.

The WWC team presented 43 outreach projects focusing on elementary and high school students, college students, and the community. These projects were judged by a 15-member panel of local and national business leaders and entrepreneurs. WWC received the first-place vote of every judge.

For the second year in a row, the WWC team also won the Success 2000 competition. The competition encourages SIFE teams to mentor disadvantaged and at-risk youth and undereducated adults in developing skills necessary for the global market.

Eleven WWC students attended the regional exposition. Project report presenters were Yuesha Chen, 2000 business administration graduate; Heidi Lee, senior business administration major; Alicia Fillmore, 2000 business administration graduate; and Brandy Weller, senior business administration major.

Technical team members were Suresh Kumar, 2000 business administration graduate; and Dennis Lee, 2000 business administration graduate.

The annual report production team was John Heyden, junior computer information systems major; David Perrin, 2000 business administration graduate; and Ed Schwisow, senior mass communications major.

Other SIFE members who attended were Sock Hwa Lim, 2000 business administration graduate; and Boris Nikolayev, freshman theology and business administration major.

The students were accompanied by SIFE team advisor JoAnn Wiggins, professor of business.
