Evening Lecture Expands Chapel Options

Students have another Chapel option with the addition of a new Evening Lecture Series.

Over the last several years, Chapel programs covered a wide variety of topics. However, student feedback indicated a range of spiritual needs.

Some asked for a more holistic approach to Chapel services, wanting programs on issues facing the nation, the church, and the individual.

Others were uncomfortable when the service, usually held in the College Church, departed from strictly spiritual topics, citing programs addressing rape, sleep disorders, and mental health issues.

In response, Alden Thompson, professor of biblical studies, proposed an evening forum featuring topics important to the holistic view.

Terrie Aamodt, professor of English and history, was asked to oversee the Evening Lecture Series. She led a committee that developed the program last winter. Committee members included Thompson; Jonathan Neidigh, assistant professor of chemistry; Ethan Pooley, junior humanities major; and Sara Grable, senior English major.

“The series provides a valuable opportunity to have people from various disciplines discuss topics of mutual interest and to provide the campus with a model of vigorous, collegial discussion. It provides a thoughtful, Adventist context for approaching some of the most engaging issues of our time,” Aamodt says.

This school year, the series format features a lecture followed by a question and answer period. Series topics include evolution and creation, psychology and counseling, and theology and eschatology.

Presenters include faculty, guest lecturers, and community experts. “Presenters may not be Adventist, but they will address issues which are important for Adventists to consider and understand,” says Thompson.
