Tree Tradition Continues

For the first time since 1980, a mountain ash tree was planted on the wwc campus in a special ceremony. The Associated Students of Walla Walla College (aswwc) Senate planted the tree on the southern edge of Centennial Green as a symbol of student commitment to the growth and excellence of wwc. During the ceremony, Aaron De Simone announced the aswwc Campus Center Fund, a new fund established with a $30,000 gift to be used as seed money for a future student center.

The dedication of this mountain ash was the fifth in the college’s history. A Greek class planted the first mountain ash tree in 1897 as part of a ceremony in honor of the ancient languages Greek and Latin. Since 1917, the student yearbook has been titled the Mountain Ash, and in 1931 the college adopted the forest green and orange-red of the mountain ash leaves and berries as the official school colors.
