Campus Currents

Mentors, Scholars, and Friends

Never say never. Just ask Michaelynn Paul, instructor in critical care nursing on the Portland campus. “I once said I would never, ever teach,” says Paul. “Now look at me. I love everything about teaching.” And she is good at it, say the students who nominated Paul for a recent teaching award.

“I love the looks in students’ eyes when they catch on to something,” she says. “It’s like seeing a light bulb turn on.”

Gene Jacobson, manager of the Grounds Department, would agree on that point. Seeing students grow is one of his favorite parts of the job. “I enjoy seeing their lives change. They become more successful and responsible,” he says. Jacobson has employed more than 1,000 students during his 25 years as grounds manager and is known as a friend to students. Paul and Jacobson were two of the five faculty and staff honored at commencement with awards for their outstanding service and dedication.
Paul received the Excellence in Teaching award, and Jacobson received a Staff Recognition award.

Also honored was Terrie Aamodt, professor of English and history, who received the Excellence in Scholarship award for her latest book, a monograph titled Righteous Armies, Holy Cause: Apocalyptic Imagery and the Civil War. The book was released from Mercer University Press in June. It analyzes how the Union, the Confederacy, and slaves all used biblical apocalyptic imagery during this period of U.S. history.

Tom Emmerson, professor of art, received the Excellence in Advising award. In addition to teaching, chairing the department, and producing his own art, Emmerson is known for the personal attention he gives students.

Molly Hansen, executive secretary for the School of Education and Psychology, received a Staff Recognition Award. She was nominated for her positive attitude, efficiency, and for her rapport with students. W
