Janet Ockerman, professor of social work, was named Educator of the Year at the National Association of Social Workers Washington State Chapter Conference in Tukwila, Wash.

Hollis James, assistant professor of special education, received his doctorate in special education from Auburn University. His dissertation was titled “An Examination of the Relative Effectiveness of Step-by-Step Explicit Instruction and Traditional/Basal Instruction in Teaching Arithmetic Story Problems to Middle School Students with Mild Disabilities.”

Lucy Krull, professor of nursing, was recently invited to become an accreditation site visitor for the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. This is the same organization that accredits WWC.

Gail Rittenbach, professor of education and psychology, published an article in the Journal of Adventist Education. The article focused on women in science and was based on interviews with Rita R. Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation.

Hui En Pham, junior electrical engineering major, recited 1,051 digits in the annual Randy Yaw Pi Contest held on campus during Mathematics Awareness Week. Pham smashed the 1,007-digit record she set last year.

Steve Miller, senior art major, won a merit award at the Carnegie Juried Art Show in Walla Walla for his acrylic painting, “Another Shade of Still Life.”

Greg Schneider, senior mechanical engineering major, received second place in the 2001 Region VIII Student Conference Old Guard Oral Competition for his irrigation sprinkler design. Students from 29 colleges and universities in the Northwest, Alaska, and western Canada attended the event sponsored by The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. W
