1940s
Mary McConaughey ’41 lives in Boulder, Colo., where she says she stays close to her rocking chair and enjoys retirement. Mary was a social worker and a teacher, though she says teaching was her first love. In 1981 she officially retired from psychiatric social work and has since enjoyed her hobbies of reading and golf.

Elsie (Leiter) Mann ’41 resides in Tacoma, Wash., where she is retired from a career in nursing. She has enjoyed many musical years in Portland and Tacoma and has taken several trips abroad, including traveling to Israel, Athens, and Corinth. Though she has had three strokes, Elsie considers herself in good health, and she takes walks every day. She fondly remembers the beautiful WWC campus and Conard Hall, which she lived in the year it opened, when it had no shades on the windows or shower stalls.

Olga (Neufeld) Brewer ’41 lives in Glendale, Calif., with her fellow classmate and husband, Edgar ’51. Olga’s favorite memories are of what happened after curfew in the girls’ dorm. She and Edgar recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Marie (Jenkins) Adams ’51 and her husband, Earl ’51, reside in Desert Hot Springs, Calif., where they are both enjoying their retirement. Marie and Earl taught together in the Adventist school system for almost 40 years in states across the country, including Oregon, North Dakota, Maryland, and many others. They worked overseas in Iran, Bangladesh, and Thailand. Both Earl and Marie have enjoyed camping for more than 50 years, ever since Earl bought a double sleeping bag after they married in 1950.

Elden Walter ’51 has ministered and taught together with his wife, Judy, throughout the United States and the world, including Australia, Thailand, Borneo, England, and Russia. Elden has published books and written articles for Adventist Review and Ministry magazines, and he served as director for the Voice of Prophecy Bible School. He has conducted training seminars as well as spoken for numerous weeks of prayer programs from Nova Scotia to Perth, Australia. He also enjoys giving gospel concerts. His hobbies include flying, backpacking, and playing the occasional game of golf with his wife.

Louise (Hudson) Rea ’51 is a retired teacher living in College Place. Her favorite pastime is exploring mountain trails. Her hobby is the subject of her recent book Quick Trips to the Wallowas. In addition to writing and exploring, Louise volunteers with Gospel Outreach and the Walla Walla General Hospital.

Maud (Mooers) Moody ’51 lives in Tonasket, Wash., with her husband, Lloyd ’51. After college Maud and Lloyd moved to Bristol Bay Mission School in Alaska, where Lloyd was principal. While there, Maud worked as a school nurse, part-time cook, and also taught home economics and grades 1-4 for the last two of their 15 years in Alaska. In addition to these responsibilities, she was the village nurse and, as help was so far away, she had many interesting experiences including stitching up wounds, delivering babies, and administering immunizations. After these years, Maud, Lloyd, and their family moved back to Washington where she taught school for two years before returning to nursing. Lloyd is a private pilot and enjoys both flying and boating.

Norma (Husman) Ekstrom ’51 resides with her husband, Carl, in Fullerton, Calif. She remembers the wonderful friendships she made at WWC and her former roommate Ione Smith. Norma graduated from Loma Linda University in 1958, and pursued a career as a physician. She says she will be ever grateful to Professor Shankel who encouraged her to pursue her pre-med goals and become a doctor.

Jose Manuel Cordero ’51 lives in West Liberty, Ky., and is a radiologist for the Appalachian Regional Hospital. After graduating from Loma Linda University in 1956, Jose returned to his homeland of Colombia, where he was a missionary in the Amazon basin for many years. He and his wife, Joyce, enjoy golf, archeology, and traveling in Latin America and Europe.

Lyndon De Witt ’51 is involved in worldwide evangelism with his wife, Martha, a retired nurse. They have traveled to India, the Philippines, and Honduras and are scheduled to go to Cuba with the Voice of Prophecy team. They have also traveled to Rwanda, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus for other evangelism campaigns. Currently they are working to raise a church in Glen Rose, Texas. Lyndon and Martha call Cleburne, Texas, their home.

Clifford Lawson ’51 lives in Walla Walla with his wife, Aletha (Downs) att. Immediately after college, Clifford was notified that he hadn’t completed the degree requirements for his minor, so he had to register for student teaching or face returning his diploma. He found teaching very rewarding, and it led to a 41-year career as a teacher, first at Clara E. Rogers Elementary School in College Place, and then in Hawaii.

Gordon Nelson ’51 and wife, Enid (Benson) att., reside in Whitmore, Calif. They enjoy giving Bible studies as well as short-term mission work with Maranatha. Gordon says one of his favorite WWC memories is living in South Hall, where he and his buddies “reveled” in dropping sacks of water on passersby below. Gordon adds, “To my horror, I targeted Dr. Bower with a hit. Years later, my guilt prompted an apology to him, and he graciously said he couldn’t remember the occasion!”

Richard White ’51 lives in Keene, Texas, with his wife, Margaret. Richard first worked as a physical education teacher, and has since published numerous books on church and health reform. During the Nixon administration he served in the War Department throughout most of the Vietnam War. His experience with the Republican Party eventually led him to become an active member of the party’s Inner Circle in Washington, D.C., in 1986.

Ed Webb ’51 and his wife, Helena, live in Fairfield, Calif. After college Ed pastored for a few years along the Oregon Coast before taking the job as youth director for the Washington Conference and eventually for the North Pacific Union Conference and Lake Union Conference in Michigan. Presently he is retired and does Red Cross Disaster Services training, as well as filling interim manager positions at American Red Cross chapters during executive sessions.

Dessa (Weisz) Hardin ’51 resides in Kennebunk, Maine, with her husband, Barton. Dessa says they are very fond of their town, despite the tourists and snow. The couple has spent much time abroad in mission service, most recently a year ago in Hangzhou, China, where Bart consulted with residents, and Dessa taught American history to Chinese doctoral students going abroad.

Laurine (Wright) Kites ’61 and husband, Daniel att., reside in Pendleton, Ore., where Laurine is an office nurse for an orthopedic clinic. Laurine affectionately remembers the friends she made in college and while working at the bindery. She particularly remembers eating at the College Dairy right after a cat dissection lab with the smell of formaldehyde on her hands. Their son, Vern, graduated from WWC in 1985.

Beverly (Bretsch) Klein ’61 lives in Oregon City, Ore., with her husband, Edward ’66. Beverly and Ed worked in academies for a few years before accepting a mission call to Philippine Union College. From there, they traveled to Asia and Europe before settling near Portland, Ore. Beverly works as a residential care manager for Portland Adventist Hospital.

Bernice Willey ’61 resides in Lodi, Calif. She has retired from teaching but stays involved with the church, including work in the Over 50 Club and helping with dinners. She has many hobbies, including bird watching, oil painting, quilting, antique collecting, and playing with her computer.

Albert “Dale” Lent ’61 and wife, Myrna (Fowler) att., live in Kettle Falls, Wash., but they spend their winters in the warmer southern regions, escaping the snowy winters of Washington. Dale spent 23 years teaching industrial arts and art classes in academies, and then another 12 years as the plant manager of WWC’s Marine Station at Rosario Beach. Dale has enjoyed photography, painting, and shell collecting since his college days.

Lyle Schaber ’61 and wife, Milli (Faris) ’60, live in Vancouver, Wash. Lyle retired as a nurse anesthetist after 25 years of what he calls an enjoyable career. Lyle has also gone on several trips to Mexico to help a medical team perform cataract extractions. Lyle enjoys woodworking, leather tooling, and jewelry making. He and Milli are presently living and traveling in a motor home, spending most of their winters in Arizona. They also volunteer with the Coast Guard, teaching boating safety classes, as well as safety and environmental checks.

Robert Russell ’61 lives in Lanark, Ontario, with his wife, Donna. Following his graduation, Robert spent some time as the lay leader of a new church in Ontario. Though he has formally retired, he is currently involved in bird watching with his wife and in offering community health seminars. He fondly remembers the good times at Rosario Beach and other field trips with the biology faculty and staff.

Carlotta (Day) Munson ’61 and husband, Harold, reside in Sedan, Kan. Carlotta is passionate about genealogy and enjoys working as a secretary for the county Historical and Genealogical Society and Art Association. She researches genealogies in her spare time, has written a book, and also writes two newspaper columns for the local paper. In the past, she worked for Harold Richards at the Voice of Prophecy and says the experience has enabled her to take an active role in her church, where she fills many positions.

Ruth Ann (Chen) Davis ’61 lives with her husband, Tim, in Paradise, Calif., where she works for Golden Feather Ministries. Golden Feather Ministries trains and encourages colporteurs in the Paradise area. Ruth Ann is also in the process of recording a musical cantata, “We Behold His Glory,” which has original scripture songs she sings and spoken Bible verses.

Carol (Marsh) Campbell ’61 lives in Palo Cedro, Calif., with her husband, Mickey att., who is a physical therapist. Carol says she enjoyed the outstanding chapels and sermons given by Paul Heubach, as well as Helen Evans’s Friday evening worships. Carol’s favorite teacher was Ruth Budd, a nursing instructor at the Portland campus, whose enthusiasm and joy in exemplifying Christian principles were contagious.

Patricia (Trent) Calvert ’61 lives in Redmond, Ore., with her husband, Lyle. She says she remembers the seasons of WWC as beautiful and fragrant, from the lilacs to the autumn leaves and the snow. Now Patricia enjoys volunteering with Healthy Beginnings, reading, and traveling. She has gone to parts of Europe, including Great Britain and Ireland, as well as Mexico and the U.S.

Claire (Minouflet) Bishop ’61 lives in Goldendale, Wash., with her husband, Blake. Claire enjoys her hobbies of gardening, reading, and needlework, as well as taking trips with her husband and children. She also volunteers at a senior center and conducts health fairs for children. She remembers WWC fondly, especially a great summer spent at the Rosario Beach Marine Station.

Marilyn (Humbert) Coughren ’61 and husband, Dick ’59, work together at his dental office in Pasco, Wash. Marilyn manages the office and the accounting. In her spare time, she enjoys cross stitch, snow skiing, and reading. Skiing at Spout Springs, in fact, is one of the things Marilyn remembers the most from her Walla Walla days. The two travel frequently and have been to places all over the world, from Israel and Europe, to Peru and Australia, as well as many other countries.

Richard Hart ’66 resides in Loma Linda, Calif., where he is chancellor and chief executive officer of Loma Linda University. Dick was Alumnus of the Year for LLU in 1999. He was also honored by WWC in 1986.

Jeanne (Beck) Jarnes ’71 is the purchasing director for Pacific Press Publishing in Caldwell, Idaho, where she lives with her husband, David. On weekends she is active in church as the minister of music, and she also sings with a double mixed quartet, the Good News Singers, and travels throughout the Northwest with them. Jeanne says one of her favorite memories is the zesty baked eggs served in the cafeteria for breakfast on Wednesday mornings.

Dan White ’71 teaches science and physical education at Yakima Adventist Christian School in Yakima, Wash., where he resides with his wife, Shirlie ’71. Dan says he and Shirlie have been able to live many of their dreams, including teaching, living in Hawaii, and also building a house with a view of a lake and Glacier National Park. In Montana Dan and Shirlie enjoyed the great outdoors, where they could canoe, hike, and fly fish right out their back door, though Dan says they have now rejoined civilization and are again teaching. “Life has been good,” he says, “but 30 years sure go by quickly!”

Edward Harris ’76 lives in Seattle, Wash., with his wife, Sally. Edward has been a law enforcement officer for 20 years, and his job assignments have included patrols, gang detective work, and academy instruction. The two spend as much time as possible on their 34-foot ketch. Edward says his favorite memories from WWC are the evening resident counselor meetings with Dean Loewen and also “spinning platters” at KGTS.

Graham Glover ’76 lives in Stewart Valley, Saskatchewan, Canada, with his wife, Sharron (Waterman) ’67. Graham is a pastor and also the trust services director for the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Conference in Canada. They both enjoy golfing and gardening. Currently, they live on 10 acres in a rural setting where they enjoy views of deer, great horned owls, and clear blue skies.

James Trude ’76 lives in Elkridge, Md., with his wife, Julie. James is the assistant director for auditing services at the General Conference, and Julie is a librarian. Jim writes that more than 15 years as an auditor have taken him to many places around North America, as well as Europe and Africa. In college, Jim’s favorite memory is of a math class with his calculus professor, Tom Thompson: “I will never forget the surprise Dr. Thompson expressed when he first discovered that my identical twin brother was not me!” James was also impressed by theology professor Ernie Bursey, “who had and still has a unique ability to teach practical Christianity and to inspire his students to live it.”

Dawn (Zelka) Hainey ’76 lives in Arlington, Wash., with her husband, Herb ’78. Dawn works extensively in her church and community both as a family life coordinator and also in facilitating recovery classes. She also leads Bible studies and health ministries programs. Dawn says one of her favorite teachers was Mary Schwantes, who encouraged Dawn’s love for food science and helped unlock the mysteries to preventing flat cream puffs and tough muffins.

Linda (Surdal) Kincaid ’76 lives in Anchorage, Alaska, where she and her husband, Jim ’74, work for the Alaska Conference. Linda is an accountant, and Jim is the vice president and executive secretary. After graduation the couple moved to Alaska, and every year they take a trip through the Arctic bush visiting all the outlying churches in places such as Nome, Gambell, and Dillingham. “God has abundantly blessed us, and we give Him all the praise,” Linda writes of her work and family.

Corinne (Bouzovetsky) Mazier ’81, lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, where she is both a teacher and the principal at Saskatoon Adventist Junior Academy. After college Corinne moved to Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada, where she taught and met her husband, Donald. They have two children, JayDee and Aleisha. Corinne also tutors students and adults in reading and math, while Donald is building up his video business.

Wafia (Farag) Kinne ’81 lives in Spokane, Wash., with her husband, Jeff ’80, and their three children, Evan, Nolan, and Elise. Wafia is a piano teacher and adjunct teacher at Whitworth College, and Jeff is a minister at Spokane Central SDA Church. Wafia teaches private music lessons in her home, at two junior academies, and Whitworth. Last summer she went to the General Conference session in Toronto, and she stays active in the local church, where she teaches Junior Sabbath School.

Don Kilpatrick ’81 and his wife, Leilani, live in Tonasket, Wash. Don has worked as a youth pastor in Berrien Springs, Mich., and has also taught Bible at a school in Newbury Park, Calif. He graduated from Andrews University Seminary in 1987 and was ordained the next year. He received his professional teaching certification at La Sierra University in 1995. One of his favorite WWC memories was getting tossed into the cement pond next to the cafeteria when the water was frozen.

Wayne Alvarez ’81 and Sheron (Porter) Alvarez ’77 make their home in Vancouver, Wash., where Wayne does construction and home repairs. In the late 1980s Wayne worked out of the country for International Children’s Care, Inc., but now is back in the “good old USA,” as he calls it, and trying to relearn the fast pace. The couple has three children, Dwayne, Olivia, and Bryan.

Karla (Snow) Kimball ’81 resides in Longview, Wash. with her husband, Gary. Currently she enjoys her volunteer work at St. John Hospital. When Gary is not working, the couple likes to take trips to visit the beaches of Oregon. Karla says she greatly appreciated college professor Mary Dassenko for her kindness and understanding when things weren’t going right, as well as her good advice.

Bruce Andregg ’81 is a nurse anesthetist in Spokane, Wash., where he lives with his wife, Carole. Bruce is the owner of a corporation providing anesthesia coverage to three plastic surgeons in an independent outpatient clinic. He is also active on the local school board. One of his favorite professors was Kay Nelson, the assistant dean on the Portland campus. Bruce writes that he is grateful to Kay for allowing responsible young adults to lead fairly normal lives while living in a dorm. Bruce remembers the Warren Miller movies in the gym, the bicycle races, and his time in Portland.

Susie (Kuhns) Bunch ’81 lives in Old Hickory, Tenn., with her husband Jimm. Susie is a self-described “stay-at-home-mom” for their two young children, Jimmy and Christian, and Jimm is an administrator at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Nashville. After college, Susie received an advanced degree at Loma Linda University. The couple has taken two cross-country bicycle trips and hope that their boys will join them on their third trip in the future.

Wendy (Archer) Bleth ’84 and her husband, Jim att., live in College Place. Wendy stays at home with the couple’s 4-year-old daughter, Jessica. Jim is item processing manager at Banner Bank in Walla Walla.

Susan (Alekel) Coberly att. and her husband, Michael att., live in College Place. Michael works as an estimator at Color Press. Susan is department secretary at the WWC Technology Department and also will be opening her own antique shop.

Kathryn (Ross) Schaffer ’86 lives in Troutdale, Ore., with her husband, Dawson. The couple recently welcomed their first child, Claire Elise.

Debbie (Randall) Brown ’87 and her husband Mike, a former WWC biology and chemistry teacher, live in College Place. The couple own an engineering firm. They also spend time together volunteering at the Mission Native American SDA Church near Pendleton, Ore.

Linda Seeber ’81 and her husband, Lathern, live in Hillsboro, Ore., with their adopted daughter, Shalisha. After teaching for nine years, Linda has turned to volunteer work in her neighborhood.

Edward Ammon ’90 and his wife, Julie att., live in College Place with their 2-year-old son, Jared. Edward is director of human resources at WWC and Julie is a stay-at-home mom and also works in health information management.

Ryan Mowat ’91 works for RGM Industrial Engineering in Olympia, Wash., where he lives with his wife, Karen (Cooper) ’93, and their two young children.

Bobbie (Kyte/Oetman) Fleck ’91 resides in Walla Walla with her husband, Ron. She works for the Adventist grade school and academy, where she has started special education programs. Both Bobbie and Ron help coordinate the Good Neighbor Church in Walla Walla, and their goal is to reach the unchurched in the valley. The couple recently returned from mission trips to Guatemala and India.

Marklynn Bazzy ’91 is a freelance writer living in Beavercreek, Ore. She recently completed studies for a master’s degree in youth ministry at Andrews University and has been involved in young adult ministries. Currently she writes for many youth and young adult magazines, focusing on spiritual development and young adult evangelism opportunities and outreach.

Samuel Carlton ’91 lives in Highland, Calif., with his wife, Christina, and daughter, Lauren. Samuel graduated from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1995, and then served in the U.S. Navy until last year. During that time, he served aboard the U.S.S. Ogden and was deployed for six months in the Middle East. Currently, he is in family practice residency at a regional medical center. The couple has one child.

Charlene (Waddington) Hawkins ’91 and her husband, Jim ’92, live in Lincoln, Neb., where she works as an administrative secretary, and he works for an Internet company. Charlene helps out in the Beginner Sabbath School room at her church, and is also involved in musical groups, including a handbell choir. The couple has two children, Rebekah and Gwendolyn.

Wayne Herbel ’90 and wife, Barbara (Allen) Herbel ’91, live in Caldwell, Idaho, where Wayne works for the Idaho Transportation Department, and Barbara takes care of the couple’s two young children, Caleb and Reuben. Following graduation, Barbara received her master’s degree in human nutrition and worked as a dietician for critically ill patients.

Renee (Erhart) Karel ’91 is a financial advisor in Boise, Idaho, where she lives with her husband, John. Since graduation, Renee taught for two years in Saipan and then in Idaho before going to work for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.

Nicholas Nordby ’91 lives in Kirkland, Wash., with his wife, Julia, and their 4-year-old daughter, Alexandra. Nick works as the director of marketing for a high-tech company he helped build, and Julia is a real estate agent. Currently, Nick is also the president of the Alumni Association for Auburn Adventist Academy, and both he and Julia are involved in the Bellevue church.

Trisha (Davis) Hensel ’92 and her husband, Randy ’90, live in Touchet, Wash. Trisha is an elementary school teacher, and Randy is a network administrator at Coffey Communications, a health publications publisher. They have two children, Mikaela and Will.

Jerry Hartman ’99 and his wife, Machelle ’00, are preparing for a two-year term of service as Peace Corps volunteers in the Philippines. Jerry and Machelle will work as English language assistants for the Philippine Department of Education developing creative learning programs. Machelle will work with science teachers and Jerry with English teachers. Most recently, Jerry worked at WWC as assistant director of marketing and Machelle was a substitute teacher for the Walla Walla School District.

Brad Everett ’91 and his wife, Debra, live in Hillsborough, N.C., with their son, Logan. Brad enjoys visiting the North Carolina beaches, teaching the Sabbath School lesson at the Durham SDA church, and working as an MRI Technologist. W
