New Minor Draws From Diverse Disciplines

Art, technology, and communications have melded to form a new academic option: a photography minor. The curriculum draws from existing courses, with an interdisciplinary approach. In addition to traditional photography classes, students will take classes to help them develop visual skills that go beyond the mechanics of photography.

“We’re requiring classes like drawing and video, because I have the basic viewpoint that composition is composition is composition. If we have those universal concepts in place, we can only strengthen that by looking at it from a variety of disciplines,” says Shane Hinshaw, assistant professor of graphics.

“We’re continuing to make the facility better and make the equipment better,” says Hinshaw. The next step, he says, is to develop more specific course offerings to meet the expanded demand. The Technology Department could make these expansions within the next two years, developing classes with a more specific focus, such as studio lighting, composition theory, and digital photography. W
