1940s Top
LaRene (Warren) Spady ’46 and her husband, Louis ’47, make their home in Gresham, Ore. Louis and LaRene are both retired. They participate in various service activities, and they enjoy the grounds and flower beds at the Village Retirement Center where they live. LaRene and Louis have two children, Jay ’75, and Billie Jean Spady Knight ’71.

Hervey Gimbel ’50 and his wife, Ann (Matterand) att., are semi-retired in Centralia, Wash. Hervey was recently appointed guest professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China. Hervey, a medical graduate of Loma Linda University, and Ann have traveled to China 17 times in the past 12 years conducting lectures and training workshops about methods of health education.

Norman Severance ’53 and his wife, Margaret (Anliker) att., live in Chloride, Ariz. Norman was an academy teacher and librarian. He retired from Weimar Institute in 1989 and is active in volunteering with the church school library organization. Memories of college include living in college trailer court, his and Margaret’s determination to make ends meet and finish his college education, and operating the Home Bakery while working nights and caring for their children. The Severances have five children and seven grandchildren.

Sydney Stewart ’53 and his wife, Florence (Olson) att., live in College Place, where he is a retired school teacher. Sydney taught for 36 years at various Seventh-day Adventist academies, including Laurelwood, Lodi, and Pendleton. He feels the Lord has blessed Florence and him through their years of service. Since retirement, Sydney keeps busy bookkeeping, building houses, and playing trumpet with a local group and the Inland Northwest Symphony. The Stewarts have three children, Cindy ’75, Debbie, and Shari; and one granddaughter, Mishy.

Vera (Wolcott) Young ’53 and her husband, Wiley att., live in West Linn, Ore. Following graduation Vera was employed by Oregon’s Highway Department, Attorney General’s Office, and the State Supreme Court. In 1966 Vera and Wiley accepted a call to Guam to help establish a dental clinic and Seventh-day Adventist mission. Other overseas assignments followed. Wiley retired when they returned in 1982, and she retired in 1996. Now they enjoy workouts at the gym and Vera especially enjoys Tai Chi classes. Other hobbies include crosswords, puzzles, reading, and knitting. Vera’s favorite college memories include Mrs. Zolber’s warm cherry pie with ice cream at the fountain, being part-time secretary to Professor Cross, and almost everything connected with working on the Collegian, especially the evening paste-up sessions, sometimes followed by a staff celebration.

Ann (Haraden) Cornell ’58 makes her home in College Place. Now retired, Ann served in a number of roles: college church clerk, community services thrift shop volunteer, babysitter for her grandchildren, associate deaconess, assistant church treasurer, and WWC volunteer. She has two children, Sherri (Cornell) Brown att., and Greg att.; and five grandchildren, Tyler, Brendan, Caitlin, Emily, and Keifer.

Ruby (Bader) Hain ’58 and her husband, Dieter, reside in Walla Walla. They have two sons, Mark att., and Tim att. Ruby retired from nursing in 1998. She loved the nursing profession because of its flexibility. Ruby shares that a life-changing experience was her fight with cancer. “Each day is a new treasure to be cherished and enjoyed,” says Ruby.

Luanna (Jorgenson) Handley ’58 and her husband, Charles-Howard ’59, make their home in Woodburn, Ore. She is retired after 35 years as a registered nurse and he after 20 years as an engineering designer. Luanna enjoys entertaining family and friends, and Charles-Howard loves working on their farm. He also does arrangements for their church’s orchestra. They have two children, Dan and Jeanenne (Schmid) att.; and two grandchildren, Ryan and Jacob. Luanna’s favorite WWC memories are vespers and working with friends in the cafeteria.

Rita Hopper ’58 lives in Aliso Viejo, Calif. She retired from Los Angeles County, where she was a pathologist until 1996. Now she works part-time doing office work and spends a great deal of time creating art. Rita enjoys several media, in particular pen/pencil, watercolor, and pastels. She also enjoys black-and-white photography. Her favorite memories from WWC are of friends and several of her classes, like camp craft with Mr. Winters and art with Mr. Temple.

Charleta (Montgomery) Handly ’62 and her husband, James, live in Wenatchee, Wash., where she is a public health nurse and he is an accountant. Charleta enjoys service activities, and she and James have two children, Patrick and Brian.

Sandra J. Love ’62 makes her home in Zephyr Cove, Nev., where she works in real estate for Chase International. She retired as an operating room nurse in 2000. Travel has been a major part of Sandra’s life, and she spent nearly five years in Europe, and then traveled through places such as Yugoslavia, Turkey, Damascus, Iran, Iraq, Nepal, Bali, and Singapore. Now close to Lake Tahoe, she enjoys skiing, hiking, biking, and snow shoeing. Another current interest is educating herself and others about the importance of exercise for prevention of osteoporosis. Sandra’s favorite WWC memories include the close relationships formed in the nurse’s dorm at “Portland San,” vespers, walks up to Mt. Tabor Park, water skiing at the Stuarts, Kopfer’s Kitchen, and class trips to Cannon Beach.

Louise (Cowin) Bartholomew ’63 and her husband, Dale ’66, make their home in Charlotte, N.C. Louise is a homemaker, and Dale is manager with Parson’s Transportation Group. They have two children, Cameron ’94 and Mardene Fowler ’97. Dale and Louise love visiting their children and grandchildren.

Wanda (Boyd) Bjerk ’63 and her husband, Arthur, reside in Tacoma, Wash. Wanda is a retired school teacher who enjoys traveling and spending time with her new grandson, Erik. She and Arthur have two children, Arthur III, and Erika. Wanda’s favorite WWC memories are of singing Friday nights while waiting for the cafeteria to open, Sabbath Services in a new chapel, and teachers willing to give her extra help in difficult classes.

Patricia (Craik) Fackenthall ’63 and her husband, John ’64, live in Walla Walla. They have five children, Ingrid, Peter, Katrina, Kristian William, and Johannes, all WWC graduates; and five grandsons, Patrick, James, Michael, Sedric, and Aaron. Patricia served three years as an alumni officer and lists among her favorite life experiences her 15 years as a stay-at-home mom. She also enjoys travel, family, and flower gardening.

Helen Godfrey Pyke ’63 and her husband, Ted ’62, reside in Collegedale, Tenn. He is employed with McKee Foods, and she works as an English teacher at Southern Adventist University. Helen writes and teaches several writing courses, including creative writing and creative writing for elementary teachers. She and Ted have three children and five grandsons. Their first granddaughter was born Jan. 3, 2003, and they are rejoicing over that wonderful gift.

Harvey Harden ’63 and his wife, Pat (Munroe) att., make their home in Sandpoint, Idaho. He is retired after 35 years of service with the City of Spokane, Wash., as chief examiner and civil service director. They have two children and one grandson. Harvey and Pat enjoy boating, snow skiing, motorcycling, and travel. Harvey’s favorite college memories are of Pat’s home parties and Applington’s literature class.

Marsha (Schwartz) Salisbury ’63 resides in Puyallup, Wash., where she is a rehab nurse care coordinator. She has two children, Ken ’01 and Galyn, and enjoys birdwatching and gardening.

Judy Toop ’63 lives in Auburn, Wash. Following graduation she taught at Monterey Bay Academy and then was associate dean of women at WWC. After completing her master’s in biology in 1969, she taught at Rosario Beach. Judy is now a science teacher at Auburn Adventist Academy, teaching biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology.

Roman Hintz ’64 and his wife, Linda, are both actively involved in Adventist education. He is a math and science teacher at Walla Walla Valley Academy, and she is a library technician at WWC. Linda also organizes the Alumni Homecoming Weekend car show. The Hintzes have four children, all WWC graduates. Rick ’87 is an engineer for the Navy in San Diego. Dave ’87 is a senior analyst for US Equity Research. Darlene Anderson ’94 is raising a family. Sharon Schafer ’91 and ’00 is raising a family and working toward another degree. Roman and Linda include kayaking, classic cars, videography, and traveling among their hobbies. They also enjoy service activities and have helped equip school and conference libraries in Kenya. Over the years the Hintzes have sent more than 6,000 books to Kenya.

Sharon Lee (Lund) O’Neil ’64 and ’67 and her husband, Roger ’70 and ’73, have made their home in Houston, Texas, for the past 23 years. Both Sharon and Roger are professors, she at the University of Houston and he at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Sharon is the current president of the National Business Education Association and also an author. She most recently wrote Motivation: An ATM Card for Success; Leadership: Steps Every Manager Needs to Know, 3rd ed.; and Your Attitude is Showing, 10th ed.; all published by Prentice Hall, Inc.

Orletta (Wilson) Dealy ’68 and her husband, Donald ’48 and ’62, make their home in College Place. She is a retired teacher-librarian. Orletta enjoys travel, crocheting, and e-mailing with family and friends. Since retiring, she keeps busy volunteering and assisting in fundraising for Blue Mountain Television. She and Donald also operate a Discover Bible School for the Voice of Prophecy. Orletta fondly remembers meeting Don her freshman year, being put on ‘social’ six weeks before their wedding, and the North Hall dean kindly helping them find ways (hall repair jobs) to spend time together. The Dealys have three sons, Don II att., Marvin att., and Tom att.; and four grandchildren, Richard, Douglas, Matthew, and Melody.

Don Kellogg ’68 and his wife, Linda (LeFore) att., live in Walla Walla. Don has practiced dentistry in the Walla Walla Valley. Linda and Don have one daughter, Julie ’01, who is now studying dentistry at Loma Linda University. Don enjoys many recreational activities, such as hiking, skiing, boating, and motorcycling, and his classic car.

Marvin Pinder ’68 and his wife, Joan, reside in Calexico, Calif., where he is employed as a mathematics teacher at Calexico Mission School. Joan and Marvin have two sons, James ’97 and Gregory ’95. A recent career highlight for Marvin was being included in the 2002 Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. His favorite college memories include College Church services with Mel West playing organ and working with “the guys” in the audio visual department.

June (Dasher) Waggoner ’72
, and her husband, Leroy att., live
in College Place. She is a bookkeeper/secretary at the WWC Peterson Memorial Library, and he is a professional land surveyor and survey manager for Anderson-Perry and Associates. The Waggoners enjoy many activities, including motorcycling, RV camping, hiking, rollerblading, and snow shoeing. LeRoy and June are actively involved with their church. They have three children, Luke curr. att., Levi curr. att., and Julee (Waggoner) Smith att.

Rebecca Ann (Runyan) Ames ’73 and her husband, Kenneth ’72, reside in Pasco, Wash. Rebecca is employed as an elder caregiver. She and Kenneth have two children, Amber, and Ted curr. att. Rebecca enjoys sewing, reading, teaching, and service and outreach activities. Her favorite college memories include exploring cultural cooking and great music programs in the old Columbia Auditorium.

Dorothy (Pearson) Cupino ’73 and her husband, Elmer ’70, reside in Orwigsburg, Pa., where she is a medical practice manager, and he is a medical doctor. The Cupinos have two children, Andrew curr. att., and Alan. Dorothy enjoys reading biographies, mysteries, and cookbooks, and greatly appreciates her time spent living in Mexico. Her favorite college memories include a Victor Borge concert, performances at Columbia Auditorium, working for Dr. Leno, meeting new people and hearing new ideas.

Dorothy (Brooks) Davey ’73 makes her home in Walla Walla. She has two children, Sampson and Brooke ’99. Dorothy is employed as a community health nurse for Family Medical Center. She has been a registered nurse for 30 years. The marriage of her son in June of 2001 was a recent highlight. Favorite WWC memories include times at the Portland campus, lying in the sun on the dorm roof, and her obstetrics rotation at the hospital. Dorothy also fondly remembers playing in the snow on the main campus, her dorm mates, and late night get-togethers.

David Gillham ’73 and ’78 and his wife, Rosa (Conner) ’74, make their home in College Place. David is the principal of Milton-Stateline Seventh-day Adventist School. He and Rosa have four children, Rachelle, Darcia curr. att., Caleb curr. att., and Seth. His favorite WWC memory is of meeting his wife on the “Hello Walk.”

Beryl (Pearson) Haarsma ’73 and her husband, Jeffery att., reside in Portland, Ore., where she is a clinical home health supervisor. They have two daughters, Carrie and Sarah. The Haarsmas spend their time at church activities and Jeffery enjoys taking care of tropical fish. Favorite college memories are of the music and worships in Conard Chapel with talks by Dean Howard.

Barbara (MacDougall) Whiteaker-Hansen ’73 and ’74 lives in Waitsburg, Wash., where she is in real estate sales. She has seven children, Sharon att., Russell att., Alan, Warren, Valerie, Michael, and Shawn. Barbara enjoys gardening, horses, camping, boating, and playing the piano.
John Munce att., and his wife, Marianne, make their home in Santa Barbara, Calif., where John is an endodontist and Marianne, an attorney. They enjoy adventure travel, snow skiing, and water skiing.

Diane Roenfeldt att., makes her home in Anthem, Ariz. After attending WWC, Diane graduated from Portland State University and the University of Oregon School of Law in 1991. She has three children, Jesse, Cheyenne, and Tristan. A former long-time resident of College Place, Diane would enjoy hearing from other alumni, and those who attended Rogers Elementary School.

Donna (Kingsley) Coffeen ’78 and her husband, Jonathan ’77, reside in Walla Walla with their two children, Philip curr. att., and Aaron. Donna is head teacher at the Walla Walla County Juvenile Justice Center and teaches all subjects to students 10-18 years of age. She received her master’s degree from WWC in 1985, and a special education endorsement in 1998. As for hobbies, Donna is an avid rubber stamp artist.

Jackie (Bechthold) Gordon ’78 and her husband, Mel, make their home in Estacada, Ore. Jackie is a social worker at the Adventist Medical Center, and she and Mel have one daughter, Briquitta. The family lives on a small farm, growing and selling a variety of berries. Jackie enjoys aerobics, water and snow skiing, hiking, and traveling. Her favorite memory of WWC is dining out with friends on Saturday nights: first at Pete’s Pizza for salad, then at Abby’s Pizza for pizza, and finally at Baskin-Robbins for dessert.

Larry Summerton ’78 and his wife, Susan (Murphy) att., live in Gladstone, Ore. Larry received his master’s degree in business administration from Willamette University in 1980, and he has worked in real estate and business management for the last 20 years. July will mark the 25th wedding anniversary for the Summertons. They met their freshman year in a music class. Their first date was skating in the old auditorium. Larry’s favorite WWC memories are of hiding in a Hallmark closet on Saturday mornings to avoid room check, obtaining permission from Dean Reynolds to ring the old Ad Building bell, and a thought-provoking World Religions course. Larry has traveled in Asia, and in 2001 he trekked to the Mt. Everest base camp. Susan and Larry have three children: Melissa, Brian, and Lindsay.

Keith Wilkens ’78 and his wife, Joyce ’78, live in Spokane, Wash. The couple have three children, Taylor curr. att., Emily, and Fletcher. Joyce is a mom and volunteer, and Keith is a family practice physician. The Wilkens have several hobbies that include church activities, woodcarving, music, basket-weaving, travel, and teenagers. The couple celebrates their 25th wedding anniversary this June. Some favorite WWC memories are ice-skating class, Donnie Rigby’s play productions, Friday nights at the college church, and working at the student health center.

Ron Bacon ’80 and his wife, Melody, make their home in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. He works in the field of marriage and family therapy and has a full-time private practice. She is completing testing and required hours to become a licensed clinical psychologist. Together they have cofounded a company, Relationship Visions, Inc. The Bacons enjoy golf, reading, parenting, and presenting workshops. They are currently in the process of writing a book on relationships titled Happily Married After. They attend the Coast Hills Community Church, where they conduct relationship workshops three times yearly. The Bacons have two children, Justin and Mallory Joy.

Mike Bishop ’80 and his wife, Jan, live in Clackamas, Ore., where he is a teacher with Portland public schools. They have two daughters, Kristen and Chelsea. Recently, Mike recorded a religious CD titled Rise Again with a major religious recording studio in a suburb of Nashville, Tenn., area. Fittingly, his favorite college memories are music related. Mike remembers singing with the concert choir and Schola Cantorum, under the direction of Dr. Harold Lickey, as “great outlets for relieving the stresses of a student taking a full load of classes at WWC,” and he credits his college vocal training as a key factor to his recording experience. The cd will soon be released by Praise Hym Studios and will be available independently through Mike Bishop.

Linda Ivy ’81 resides in Eugene, Ore., with her 13-year-old son Christopher. She is currently a graduate student in clinical psychology. When Linda finds time away from her graduate work, she loves hiking and mountain climbing.

Debbie (Rowell) Lampson ’82 and her husband, Eldon att., live in Portland, Ore., where she is a hospital administrative supervisor at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center. When she is not at work, Debbie volunteers her time at her sons’ school. The Lampsons have two children, Grant and Parker, and attend the Pleasant Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church. Outside of work and school, they spend as much time as possible outdoors, biking, kayaking, camping, gardening, and hiking.

Holly (Ingersoll) Abrams ’83 and her husband, Ron ’82, reside in Sequatchie, Tenn., with their two children, Mishala and Honiko. After graduation, the Abrams moved to the Far East as missionaries for 11 years. They returned in 1994. Holly is a teacher and principal of Jasper Adventist Christian School, and Ron is head of the county’s area children and youth services. The Abrams love animals, oriental gardens, and fish ponds.

Gabriel Acosta ’83, and his wife, Cindy, reside in Walla Walla, where he is chief deputy prosecuting attorney for Walla Walla County. He worked in Saipan for one year and has presented cases before the State Supreme Court. Cindy and Gabriel are involved with foster care and have adopted several children. The Acostas have five children: Alexander, Victoria, Curtis, Michael, and Cassandra.

Rose (Grismore) Buchanan ’83 and her husband, Carl att., reside in Portland, Ore. They have three children, Amy, Alex, and Andrew. Rose is employed as a registered nurse for Portland Adventist Medical Center. Her favorite memories from WWC are of Saturday nights and good friends.

Cherie Caviness ’83 and her husband, Roger Calvert, make their home in Marysville, Wash. Cherie is employed as a finance manager with ArtLogix, Inc. Currently she is starting a food product business in honor of her mother. Roger and Cherie enjoy living in the Northwest with their two dogs, Casey and Sasha. Cherie’s favorite college memory is of spending time on the fourth floor of the Ad Building learning computers.

Sheryl (Lang) Chapin ’83 and her husband, Rusty, live in Oregon City, Ore., where Sheryl is a registered nurse and works with Guide Dogs for the Blind. The Chapins have three children, Jimmy, Andy, and Jamie. In her free time Sheryl enjoys golfing, reading, traveling, and spending time with family. Her favorite college memory is of weekend ski trips with the Portland campus students.

Don Dart ’85 and his wife, Melinda (Hill) ’84, reside in Highlands Ranch, Colo. Don is a senior staff engineer at Lockheed Martin on the Titan program, and Melinda is in retail sales. His hobbies include hockey and time with family. The Darts have two children, Casey and Cara.

Debora (Johnson) Axford ’93 and ’94 and her husband, David ’82, make their home in Yakima, Wash. They have two children, Kristen att., and Matthew. Debora serves as a master trainer for the Infant Adoption Awareness Training Program with the National Council for Adoption. In 2001 she received her advanced social work licensure. She spends a large amount of time working with young people in her church and in her spare time enjoys travel, reading, cooking ethnic foods, and playing games with family and friends.

Robert Olfert ’93 and his wife, Victoria, live in Auburn, Wash. Robert is a network administrator at Service Master.

Michael Zbaraschuk ’93 and his wife, Lisa (Roberton) ’93, reside in Seattle, Wash., where Lisa is completing her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Washington. Michael is a religion instructor at Pacific Lutheran University and received his doctoral degree in philosophy of religion and theology from Claremont Graduate University in 2002. Favorite college memories include the “romantic” light of the fountain in the springtime, Glen Greenwalt’s philosophy of religion class, and Ron Joliffe’s spirituality and aesthetics class.

John G. F. Carey ’94 and his wife, Khichala, reside in Nassau, Bahamas. John is a member of Parliament and parliamentary secretary at the Ministry of Works and Utilities, a position to which he was elected in the Bahamas general election in 2002. (This role is equivalent to U.S. congressman and assistant secretary of public works and energy.) His hobbies include golf, traveling, public speaking, and surfing the internet. John and Khichala have one son, Khalil J.W.

Cindy R. (Olsen) Williams ’95 and her husband, Ezra, live in Loma Linda, Calif., were Cindy works as assistant director of the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation. Previously Cindy was director of capital campaigns at WWC. During her time with WWC, Cindy managed the fundraising campaign for the renovation and construction of five major campus buildings.

Jorge Barcelo ’98 has recently begun studies at Southwestern University School of Law. Jorge and his wife, Lisbeth (Flores) att., have one daughter, Anna. The couple makes their home in La Puente, Calif.

Travis Franklin ’98 and his wife, Nichole (Kreuder) ’01, live in Nampa, Idaho, where Travis is vice president/director of marketing for Home Federal Savings, a bank headquartered in Nampa. Nichole is a stay-home mom to Conner and Jenna. Travis loves riding dirt bikes and does so with his dad and buddies whenever he gets a chance.

Lorena A. Mell att., recently graduated from the University of Phoenix with dual bachelor degrees in business administration and business management. She currently works for Toyota Financial Services in Chandler, Ariz. W
