1940s Top
Clyde Smith ’40 and his wife, Winifred, are retired and living in Big Timber, Mont. Clyde is nearly 90 years old and yet still cuts and splits wood in the mountains. He also enjoys snow skiing each winter. The Smiths have a son, Roger ’73, and one granddaughter.

1950s Top
Edna (Strimple) Boone ’54 lives in Walla Walla. Edna was an Army Nurse stationed in the Philippines during World War II. She then worked at the Walla Walla veterans hospital. Now retired, Edna enjoys making quilts for shut-ins, and visiting shut-ins at the hospital and at the Odd Fellows Home.

Norman Britton ’54 and his wife, Nadine (Williams) ’52 and ’62, live in Exeter, Calif. Norman and Nadine have been married 52 years. Norman is a retired dentist, and Nadine a retired nursing instructor. Norman writes that his favorite WWC memory is, “meeting and dating [my] wife.” They have two children, Cherie ’75 and Craig; and two grandchildren. EMAIL

Wendell Danielson ’54 and his wife, Vera (Keightley) att., are retired in Aldergrove, British Columbia, Canada. They have four children who all attended WWC; Kent ’91 and ’92, Cindy Rockwell, Sandra Smith, and Wendy Witas ’84.

Charles Hellman ’54 lives in Sandy, Ore., with his wife, Marilyn (Christensen) att. Charles is still working part-time at Portland Adventist Medical Center where he has been since 1973. He enjoys cars, playing golf, and collecting Hot Wheels cars. Charles and Marilyn have four children, Michael att., Terry att., Steve, and Nanett Ringering; and six grandchildren. EMAIL

John Lamb Jr. ’54 and his wife, Janet, reside in Darlington, Md. John served in the U.S. Army’s Whitecoat Project from 1955 to 1957 and went on to be the director of environmental health for Harford County Health Department. He and his wife have enjoyed 42 years of marriage, and have a son, John, as well as two grandchildren. “The WWC experience was the greatest two years of my life,” he writes. “I received 50 years worth of everything to carry one though life.”

Jim McHan ’54 and his wife, Carolyn (Boyer) ’54, make their home in Eugene, Ore. Jim is a physician who developed a community health education program, which he has offered each January for the last 35 years. He has traveled around the world conducting health education programs in places such as Romania, Poland, Ireland, Russia, and China. Carolyn has been equally busy being a full-time homemaker for 35 years, and then starting a piano studio 17 years ago. She served six years as vice president of communications for Adventist- Laymen's Services and Industries (ASI) and is still involved in the program and music committees for the annual conventions. She is a WWC board member, and remembers fondly the Seniors in Action for God with Excellence (SAGE) group mission trip to the Dominican Republic. They have three children Steve ’81, Kathy McMillan att., and Nancy Wolfe att.; and six grandchildren. EMAIL

Audrey (Cramer) Redmer ’54 and her husband, Gordon, live in Moses Lake, Wash. Audrey has good memories from WWC of Friday night vespers, singing in the choir, and skiing in the Blue Mountains. The Redmers have two daughters, Carmie Hadley att., and Laurie. EMAIL

Stewart Shankel ’54 and his wife, Elaine, live in Redlands, Calif. Stewart is the director of clinical instruction of biomedical sciences at University of California. Stewart has taught at several institutions, as well as having his own medical practice. He keeps busy tending to 900 apple trees and being with the grandkids. He remembers spending many evenings in the library for they provided “a good time to see the opposite sex.” Stewart and Elaine have four children, Stewart III ’81, Jeffrey ’84, Theodore ’84, and Martha ’93; and six grandchildren. Walter Sheer ’54 and his wife, Doris, live in Huntington, Md. Walt retired in 2002 from 44 years as a family practice physician. He enjoys water skiing and snow skiing, reading and drawing, and is writing a book on his life for his family. He writes, “WWC was the turning point in my life.” Walter and Doris have four daughters, Kimberly att., Leslie, Keli Mace, and Susan Perkin; and three grandchildren.

Marjorie (Tupper) Wentland ’54 is living in Goldendale, Wash. She worked for 20 years as a night charge nurse. She enjoys gardening, sewing, vegan cooking, and church work. While at WWC, Marjorie loved the “chapels, picnics, and flowers on campus.”

Violet Wentland ’54 is retired and living in Woodinville, Wash. She has spent 35 years as a teacher including 21 years at Middle East College, in Beirut, Lebanon. She has been a caretaker for family members and is a part-time nanny. Violet enjoys reading, playing the flute, and quilting. She also is writing a book, October 1978, about an experience she had in Beirut when “for 10 days missiles whizzed over [the college’s] campus toward East Beirut.”

Helen (Gray) Winkle ’54 and her husband, Arvin ’55, are retired in Ukiah, Calif. Helen taught church school for 18 years, worked as church secretary, and now has a vegetarian food store. Arvin worked as a pastor and in trust services for 41 years. Helen writes “our lives have mostly been dedicated to furthering the gospel.” They have two children, Gregory ’81 and Laura.

Vern Peterson ’57

Vern Peterson believes in community involvement. In 1962, Peterson founded the accounting firm, Peterson and Associates in Vancouver, Wash., and has been active in business and community affairs for many years. He has worked with the Clark County Historical Society, the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, and the Clark College Foundation, among others. He also serves on the boards of the Building Industry Association of Washington and the Community Housing Resource Center.

In 2003, Vern was honored as Clark County’s First Citizen by the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington. “I wonder what has brought this honor to my door,” he mused, using his talents of jokester and part-time poet. “I’m just another CPA, counting beans all day.”

Remembering his college days, the first thing Vern recalls is making cottage cheese alongside Walt Meske at the College Dairy. Vern was a business major who took Professor Jake Mehling’s advice and worked twice the required number of accounting problems in class. He believes this hard work helped him earn his CPA.

Vern and his wife, Jelene, will celebrate 50 years of marriage in May 2005. On his secret to a long and successful marriage, he jokes, “We don’t know any different, and there’s too many tax loopholes with divorce.” Vern and his wife have worked together in the accounting office for many years. He says he tries to find different ways to tell his wife that he loves her every day. The Petersons have three daughters and two grandchildren.

Roger Baltrusch ’59 and his wife, Ila (Burlingame) ’59, live in College Place. They have three children, Loren att., Regina, and Bill att.; and four grandchildren. Both Roger and Ila retired in the fall of 2001; however, Roger was pressed back into service during the 2003-04 school year teaching in WWC’s School of Engineering. From their time as WWC students, both memorably recall “developing friendships with so many great people.”

Dolores (Wagner) Robinson ’59 and her husband, George, reside in Farmington, Wash., and winter in the warmer climate of Yuma, Ariz. Dolores has made nursing her life-long pursuit and writes that she “never was sorry I chose nursing as a career. Very rewarding!” She often tells her staff “the training and experience we received [at WWC] was the absolute best.” She has worked as a nurse in Colfax, Wash., for 43 years, and does not intend to stop now. They have three children, Dale, Steven, and Kenneth; two grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. EMAIL

Maxine (Humbert) Sira ’59 and her husband, Ron, make their home in San Jose, Calif. Maxine is a retired nurse, and enjoys gardening, art, and astronomy. A life-changing experience for her has been “a deeper understanding of righteousness by faith.”

1960s Top
Joyce (Bentz) Johnson ’64 makes her home in Nordland, Wash., with her husband, Elwyn. They spend their winters in Hawaii with her children or with friends in Yuma, Ariz. Joyce worked in residential real estate before obtaining her CPA license. She has retired from her post as vice president for finance for Auburn Adventist Academy and is presently her local church’s treasurer. She keeps busy with sponsored daycare and plenty of church and community activities. Joyce has two children, Kevin Merry ’89 and Karla (Merry) Lonnstrom ’92. EMAIL

Robert Koide ’64 lives in Mililani, Hawaii, with his wife, June. Robert is president of Environ Control, Inc., and also president of Hawaii Pest Control Association. He enjoys golf, travel, and serving as a board member of Hawaii Mission Academy. Robert and June have a son, Wayne ’90. Robert remembers fondly at WWC “truly dedicated teachers who cared.” EMAIL

Donald Murray ’64 and ’70 and his wife, Susan (Glantz) att., live in Berrien Springs, Mich. Don retired last year from being dean of men at Andrews University. He has spent 40 years of service, 13 as academy dean and the last 27 at Andrews. Both Don and Susan are certified family-life educators, and Susan teaches in the family studies in behavioral sciences department at Andrews. They have two children, Marcia Jo Murray-Hales and Ryan; and three grandchildren. One of Don’s favorite WWC memories is “meeting and marrying the love of my life, Sue.” He writes that “the list could go on and on, Sue and I loved WWC and we still do.” EMAIL

George Nordby ’64 lives in Bellevue, Wash., with his wife, Nona (Lyman) att. They have two children, Nick ’91 and Marc att.; and two grandchildren. George is a senior project manager for Earth Tech, and an officer and committee member for the Seattle section of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE). He enjoys backpacking, sailing, skiing, and biking. He writes that his favorite WWC memories are “surviving the engineering curriculum and graduating,” as well as “making the best move in my life and asking Nona to marry me.” EMAIL

Muriel (Wilbur) Zaugg ’64 lives with her husband, Keith ’62, in McMinnville, Ore. Muriel is enjoying retirement from a career as a public health nurse. She now keeps busy supporting missions, helping with prison ministries, and working with Discovery Bible lessons. Muriel and Keith have two daughters, Raylene Young ’87 and Deanna Fowler ’87; and seven grandchildren. EMAIL

Stephen Chinn ’69 and his wife, Claudia (Loeffler) ’69, live in Portland, Ore. Stephen has been the associate ministerial director for the Oregon Conference since 2001, and previously he pastored in the Oregon, Montana, and Ohio conferences. Stephen and Claudia have three daughters, Camille Manley, Shelley Taylor, and Laura ’03; and four grandchildren. EMAIL

William Cowin ’69 and his wife, Nancy (Murphy) att., make their home in Battle Creek, Mich. Bill is a pastor in the Michigan Conference and in his free time enjoys camping and reading about U.S. history. Bill and Nancy have two children, Jeremy att., and Tamara Willis att. EMAIL

Mildred (Pomeroy) Deen ’69 resides in Richland, Wash. She is retired after working 20 years as a grade school teacher.

Carolyn (Bigger) Evans ’69 and her husband, Larry ’70, live in Laurel, Md. Carolyn is an IDE specialist for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and has also worked as a hospital chaplain, a conference prayer coordinator, women’s ministries advisor, and as a pastor to pastors’ wives. She enjoys travel, needlework, water sports, and reading. Carolyn and Larry have two sons, Jeffrey att., and Jonathan att.; and three grandsons.

Robert Hoffman ’69 and his wife, Elaine (Haley) att., live in Napa, Calif. Bob is the director of planned giving for Northern California in the St. Joseph health system. Elaine is the director of housekeeping for the women’s residences of Pacific Union College. They have two daughters, Suzanne, and Tracy Nash att. EMAIL

Carolyn (Harvey) Markle ’69 and ’74 and ’96 and her husband, James, are retired in Florence, Ore. Carolyn was a teacher and social worker and has worked in 11 different schools and centers, including being a secretary in the WWC registrar’s office and counseling center. She remembers fondly the organ music of the WWC church, Tom Emmerson’s artwork, and John Waterbrook’s swimming classes. Carolyn and James have a son, Jake. EMAIL

Bill Rouse ’69 and ’87 and his wife, Patty (Kinzer) ’85, live in La Quinta, Calif. Bill works as principal of Desert Adventist Academy, and has spent 34 years in Adventist education. For him a life-changing experience has been “being a parent!” They have two daughters, Lisa Springer att., and Shannon Mitchell ’96 and ’97; and four grandchildren. Bill has good memories from WWC that include Sonnenberg games, as well as “classes from many wonderful, caring teachers.” EMAIL

Jonathan Watt ’69 and his wife, Abbie (Lam Yuen) ’69, live in Vancouver, Wash. Jonathan works as a doctor and enjoys golf, woodworking, hiking, mechanics, and travel. Abbie works as a nurse and enjoys writing, and translating books from English to Polynesian, and vice versa. She and her husband are looking to move to American Samoa where Jonathan wants to help provide health care. They have four children, Michelle Couch, Shawn Foster ’96, Jonathan ’02, and Brandon ’04. Roger Smith ’73
and his wife, Connie, reside in Eau Claire, Mich. Roger continues to work for Twixwood Nursery, one of the Midwest’s largest wholesale plant nurseries. Roger and Connie have a daughter, Kimberly.

Roger Johnson ’74 and his wife, Dalene (Ringering) ’73, live in College Place. Roger is the pastor of three local churches. He also works with Positive Life Radio and Growing Christian Foundation, and is president of Blue Mountain Television. He remembers fondly “spending time at the college ham radio stations with Al Liske at k7ueb.” Roger and Dalene have a daughter, Terra curr. att. EMAIL

Wayne Johnson ’74 and his wife, Kathy, live in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. Wayne is the senior project manager for the Vancouver International Airport Authority. For the past 15 years he has served on the local school board and been involved with responsibilities for Sabbath School in his local church. Wayne and his wife have two children, Meike curr. att., and Andrew. EMAIL

Rosemary (Ashby) Kinsfather ’74 lives in Redondo Beach, Calif. After graduating she went on to work at the Corps of Engineers, which she retired from in 1989. She now works part-time as an author and volunteer, teaching seniors how to use Microsoft Word in her local senior center. Rosemary has three daughters; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Jimmy Oei ’74 and his wife, Diana ’72, live in Bakersfield, Calif. He works as a hematology supervisor, and enjoys spending time cooking, traveling, and taking photographs. He and his wife are involved in small group Bible studies and prayer breakfasts that they hold in their home. He remembers fondly from WWC the “friendly people, caring faculty, the best onions and delicious melons.”

Rick Schmachtenberg ’79

From his early interest in cars, electronics and “all things mechanical,” Richard “Rick” Schmachtenberg continues to apply his knowledge and skills to the growth of technology. Inventor, leader and innovator, Rick received a Xerox fellowship in 2003. Only about 1 percent of all engineers at Xerox receive this award and title, given to high-level engineers and scientists within Xerox and to outside industry experts in particular technical fields.

A 1979 mechanical engineering graduate, Rick started working at Tektronix designing components for high frequency spectrum analyzers and fiber optic time domain reflectometers. Within five years he joined a spin-off company called Planar Systems, becoming chief mechanical engineer. In 1991, Rick returned to Tektronix to help commercialize a new ink jet technology (Solid Ink). He and a team successfully developed and shipped ten color printer products over the next nine years. Their success led to the purchase of their division by Xerox in January of 2000. He says, “[The fellowship] award not only honored me but the hard work and accomplishments of my teams.”

It was “Prof Cross’” love for teaching and for the art of his field that played a major role in Rick’s decision to study mechanical engineering. Robert Sutton and Rod Heisler round out the trio of inspirational and influential professors prominent in Rick’s years of study at WWC. Rick also holds a master’s in mechanical engineering degree from the University of Portland.

Rick is the current vice president of operations for the Xerox Office Group. He travels extensively with his job, learning about and exploring other cultures. When at home, Rick enjoys fishing and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Debbie (Reynolds) ’80, have two children, Stefan and Jennifer.

Sharon (Plummer) Crosby ’79 and husband, Gale ’81, make their home in Boring, Ore. Sharon works at Adventist Medical Center as the employee assistance program coordinator. She loves her work and is “so grateful to the School of Social Work for my training and education.” She writes, “marrying my husband—whom I met at WWC—has been life-changing.” Sharon and Gale have two children, Justin curr. att., and Amy. Robert Cushman Jr. ’79 and his wife, Judy (Cooksley) ’77 and ’79, live in Yucaipa, Calif. Bob works as a professor at Loma Linda University, and Judy is a school psychologist. In their summers they enjoy working in Wyoming for the National Park Service. They remember fondly from WWC the pranks played in the dorm, plays in Village Hall, and dorm dating. Robert and Judy have two sons, Ryan curr. att., and Matthew.

Debi (McHutchison) Nelson ’79 lives with her husband, Greg, in College Place. Debi is an er nurse and has made plans to get back to school and become a legal nurse consultant. She enjoys doing parish nursing with her local church, reading, and cross-stitching. Debi and Greg have four children, Ryan, Candace, Crystal, and Rebecca. EMAIL

Dick Patchett ’79 and his wife, Celia, live in Marshfield, Wis. Dick is a physician. They have two children, Christopher and Allison.

Nancy (Schultz) Rittenbach ’79 and her husband, Sid ’80, live in Tillamook, Ore. Nancy is a secretary for her local hospital and enjoys beach combing, bike riding, hiking, and camping. She fondly remembers roller-skating in Columbia Auditorium before it burned down. She and her husband have a son, Cody.

Jennie (Marlatte) Salt ’79 and her husband, Kevin att., live in Mt. Vernon, Wash. Jennie writes, “my favorite job is being a mom.” Besides being a mom to Kamie curr. att., and Jason curr. att., Jennie is self-employed in a prayer ministry at her local church. She is a certified teacher, leads several other ministries, and with her husband, conducts seminars around the country. EMAIL

Yoshika Craig ’82 and her husband, Rege, a software engineer, live in Green Ridge, Mo. After graduating from WWC, Yoshika and Rege moved to Guam for seven years where she was involved in many of the island’s musical activities. Because of illness she has withdrawn from public performance but remains active in her local church musical activities. She has made a CD called “Recreation,” which showcases her soft, therapeutic music and her love of “Jesus our creator, our healer, and our comforter.” This CD is available at Yoshika’s Web site: www.geocities.com/yoshika_recreation_cd/.

Robert “Bobby” McGhee ’84 and his wife, Robin, live in Phoenix, Ariz. Bobby is pastor of the Adventist Worship Center in Phoenix, and enjoys sports, music, and keeping track of lifelong friends. He vividly recalls from WWC playing his trumpet for church, and driving his “sawed-off” station wagon convertible. Bobby and his wife have a son, Lucky Day. EMAIL

Bente (Aune) Stronegger ’84, and her husband, Paul, live in Saltnes, Norway. Bente is an art teacher, and also runs her own art school at night. She and her husband are active in their church, and want anyone heading their way to feel free to come and stay with them. Bente has two daughters, Stephanie and Christine. EMAIL

1990s Top
Joel Dario ’94 lives with his wife, Christina, in Layton, Utah. Joel works in a primary care family therapy clinic and last year was nominated for “Most Outstanding Master’s Student Project” for the University of Utah. He enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding, and being with his daughter. He writes that a vivid WWC memory for him was “my clinical rotation in labor and delivery, watching a baby being born for the first time.”

Brian Davidson ’94 and his wife, Jessica (Galvan-Koch) ’94, make their home in Burien, Wash. Brian works as long-term care administrator, and Jessica is currently a homemaker. Jessica taught for a few years and now enjoys being home with daughter, Alexa. In her free time she enjoys reading, quilting, and traveling. EMAIL

Christopher Lake ’94 and his wife, Robyn (Davidson) att., reside in Vancouver, Wash. Christopher is a substance abuse counselor and previously taught school in the Marshall Islands for two years. He enjoys following the Seattle Seahawks, movies, hiking, and camping. While at WWC, he liked being a part of the talk-it-out peer counseling and the great social and spiritual campus activities. Colleen Miller ’94 lives in Battle Ground, Wash. She is a licensed massage practitioner and is looking to work in hospice and home health in the future. She enjoys yoga, in-line skating, knitting, and travel. Colleen’s WWC memories are all filled with her friends; she writes that “everything included friends.”

Jim Pinder ’96, and his wife, Jennifer (Woods) ’97, have accepted a call to the Lifestyle Center of America, in Sulphur, Okla. Jim will be the vice president of development and Jennifer will work with employee insurance in addition to database management. Jennifer is a licensed fire and causality insurance agent in California, and is working on obtaining her Oklahoma insurance license. This past year Jim finished his mba at National University, obtained his Certified Fundraising Executive Credential, and was sworn in as a U.S. citizen.

Dan Thesman att., has moved to Upland, Calif., to serve as production manager for MBI Media, Diamond Bar, Calif. For the past five years Dan has been an award-winning producer for the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts at KERO-TV located in his hometown of Bakersfield, Calif. W
