Building Community

by Rosa Jimenez

Six weeks after Sept. 11, images of that day are still stark in my mind. Some images embody horror while others embody hope. The surreal image of an airplane crashing into the World Trade Center contrasts sharply with the image of people combing the five stories of rubble in search of survivors.

My spirits lift when I see the resolve of people working for others. There is a selflessness represented in these volunteers. Many volunteered to deal with personal pain. Others helped because of a sense of duty.

Volunteering creates community. Community builds people up. Whether in New York City; Washington, D.C.; or at Walla Walla College, volunteering has helped to build the resolve of others.

This quarter’s Westwind features some of those volunteers who make a difference in their community and their world.

Our Campus Current and Alumnotes sections feature two alumni, Darold Bigger and Jaime Rodriguez, who both witnessed the devastation on the East Coast and immediately accepted the role of helping others both physically and emotionally.

Our Year in Review section thanks alumni and friends who have given support to the future of WWC. With your support, WWC can continue in its mission of providing a Christian higher education, an education aimed at shaping strong and caring citizens.

God gives us this hope: “I know your works, love, faith, service, and your perseverance” (Rev. 2:19), and His promises give us a purpose and carry us through.
